It is really interesting to see the long term trend of food prices over the past 30 years. The chart above (from an article in the NY Times about the prospect of a soda tax click here) does raise a lot of questions. There are a lot of concerns about the health and environmental concerns about big agri-business. Are the economies of scale and industrial farming the reason that meats and cheeses see such a decline in relative costs? How much do corn subsidies and the role of corn syrup as a sweetener help drive the costs of soda down?
